Allen Meadows - Score: 93(43617)
This initially flirts with reduction but an hour of air does a lot of good as the smoky character eventually recedes if not completely disappears to reveal pretty aromas of honeysuckle, spice, green apple and a whiff of wood toast. The succulent and sleek middle weight flavors are not especially dense, which I found somewhat surprising in the context of the tiny yields in 2016, all wrapped in a delicious, classy and subtly complex finish that displays excellent length but also a touch of warmth. As my description suggests, this is somewhat awkward but my sense is that it will add weight and better harmonize with age.
Vinous - Score: 90-92(43344)
(this and the rest of the 2016 grand crus were scheduled to be bottled at the end of June or in early July; from frosted vines): Very tight, citrussy nose isn't giving up much today. Shows enticing floral hints on entry, then turns a bit spiky and ungiving in the middle palate, with its fruit in the deep background today. A distinctly chewy, more phenolic style, perhaps knocked off balance by the frost.
