The 1955 Petrus is a vintage that I have not encountered for many moons. Here it puts in a great performance, clearly showing better than the 1953. Whilst many 1955s are usually quite stately and refined on the nose, this bottle is more exotic than anticipated, daring to deliver a sense of richness courtesy of kirsch, fig and delicatessen aromas, all beautifully entwined and focused. The palate is supremely well balanced with a perfect bead of acidity and slightly viscous in texture (noticeable juxtaposed against the 1953.) It does not quite possess the awesome breeding and head-spinning complexity of the 1949 on the relatively straight-laced finish. Yet it remains a superb Petrus of the fifties and I reckon there are bottles or perhaps large formats that would knock your socks off. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London and at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong.
