The 1908 Latour came directly from the château. It is a healthy mahogany colour with commensurate bricking on the rim given its age. The bouquet is surprisingly generous, with pretty red cherry and cranberry leaf scents, mixed with musk, rusty copper piping, damp undergrowth and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity. It is reassuringly harmonious and demonstrates far more presence and substance than one would anticipate, especially for a 109-year old “off- vintage”. The 1908 fades a little towards the finish though there are traces of graphite revealed with aeration. Whilst not a complex Château Latour, this wins “points” by its sheer pleasure. Hats off to you, sir! Tasted at the Latour dinner in Hong Kong.
