Wine Critics Notes:

Allen Meadows - Score: 97 (2007 October)

I have had this wine many times over the last ten years, including several times recently. While most bottles display noticeable volatile acidity, this one was by far and away the best bottle that I have ever had and displayed no discernable VA. The color was completely bricked through though the nose, while fully mature, was gorgeously spicy, pure and layered with plenty of sous-bois. The big, powerful and robust flavors are silky on the mid-palate that turn velvety on the mouth coating finish that delivers superb length and depth. Though the '47 cannot quite match the '49 when "it's on", this bottle certainly was a knock out. Note that while most bottles of the '47 Musigny VV are certainly very good, the scores have been more in the 92 point range. Another recent note was: like most '47s today, this displays more than a trace of VA that continues on to the flavors though it seems to add a certain lift to the fully mature and extremely ripe though not stewed nose of earth, spice and pungent sous-bois. The rich, full and sweet flavors are still vibrant if no longer youthful and while the structure has largely resolved itself at this point, there is still a trace of firmness on the mouth coating and velvety finish. Like the '49 before it, this is no longer what it once was but it's still a pretty drink if you can try it from a well-stored bottle. Drink up sooner than later as this is clearly on its way down. 92/now
